BRB, floods

Uh, so this is the creek -lake now, rather - that runs behind our backyard - kind of creeped out now! Dad reckons that the water came right up the hill in the 1974 floods, but it didn't get to the house - fingers crossed that this is the case this time around. It's still got to rise another three or four metres before it comes near us, but damn, what is this bullshit?

Our suburb hasn't been officially warned yet, but the one close to us has been told they're on standby for evacuation, and there's a few nearby on the same - several of my friends have been told to get ready to move, kinda stalking them at the moment to make sure they're okay!

Eek - I hope it doesn't get any higher!

In the last few years we've started getting more apocalyptic-scale floods over here - must be all that global warming they keep talking about!

It's gone down a bit thankfully, though there's another huge chunk of rain heading our way ><

There's been so much nutty weather worldwide that it's got to be a definate contributing factor (also, this county is nuts, we're underwater, and the other side of the country is on fire!)

At least - touch wood - the state hasn't got it's usual summer cyclones. That would just push the whole thing over the edge.

Whoa. I didn't know you were in Brisbane. Floods are seriously scary, I hope the water doesn't come any higher. We had some flooding here last autumn, but nowhere near as bad as you're having now. Or as many deaths, for that matter.

They are, the videos people have been posting are frightening, you don't think of water being quite that powerful!

Thankfully we didn't get the rain, (it's sunny today ffs! This is bizzare!) so hopefully the water will start to go down without incident :D

Yikes, that's really scary! Glad it's gone down some, but I hope the worst of the next rainfall misses you.

It did miss us mostly, and it's actually brilliantly sunny today!

(And hideously muggy, but I shouldn't complain, I'm just happy to see the sun!)

The creek has mostly gone down now, guess it was being fed by the rainfall, rather then all the floodwater making it's way down.

It has thankfully, and so has the river down the road - apparently it was rainfall feeding ours, rather than the excess water coming down from the north of the state which is what flooded the city. I'm just glad it wasn't as bad as everyone was predicting!

... That's terrifying, and yet your pictures are really, really pretty. In a 'production stills from a horror movie about dinosaurs' kind of way. I keep expecting a bunch of wet, frightened teenagers in a boat, and then some scaly monstrosity leaping out of the water to eat the one who thinks they're home free now.

Heh, well, there were a number of (unconfirmed, and then scarily confirmed) of bullsharks roaming around the flooded streets in the city, so I guess that counts?

I'll have to put up a photo of the river in full force, that was scary in a really awesome kind of way - I've never seen that amount of water there, and the sound of it was amazing

A friend of mine posted (on FB) images of a water height marker literally disappearing over 3 days. That was damn scary to look at.

It didn't thankfully, it actually went down fairly quickly after it stopped raining - the river that caused it doesn't seem to be connected to the brisbane river which was doing all the flooding proper :)

It's been a couple of days since you posted these photos so I just wanted to check in with you.

How are you guys doing now? Is your family OK?

We're all okay thanks, we didn't get hit by the major ones at all - the flooding in the creek (and the river down the road) seems to have been caused by the massive amount of rain we had, we don't get any of the water released from the dams, and the high tides didn't affect us. The water's gone down a good deal now, now it's just at the level it normally is after a regular rainstorm. :)

Good to hear that you're all OK.

I'm putting together some stuff for donating (prams, a cot, a bunch of toys and baby and toddler clothes, maybe some adult clothes) but I want to find a charity that will just hand them over and not sell them. I want to give something to the families that lost everything and are not going to be able to return to their homes for months.

Ooh, that's going to be a hard one to find - the more people want to donate actual usable goods and clothing, the more the monetary charities get pushed instead :| I wonder if there's going to start to be a bit of a backlash against the usual charity methods this time around...

If you find anything that'll take and distribute the goods, point me in that direction?
